Education

FILA is committed to education.

“On island”, volunteers provide ad hoc tours to visiting boaters. Our replica lighthouse library box contains a variety of historical and natural history materials. When guides aren’t available, an interpretive sign next to the workshop introduces the history of the station and its buildings.

“On shore”, volunteers make presentations to groups such as yacht clubs, historic societies, and civic organizations and participate in events. An ongoing exhibit at the Leelanau Historical Society, Leland, MI tells the story of the lights in Leelanau County.

Educational content is shared digitally via the website, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.

To The Lighthouse” tells a brief history of the station suitable for children. Volunteers have written about the light in Lighthouse Digest, The Keeper’s Log, The Beacon and other publications. A biannual print newsletter, The South Fox Island Review, updates members on restoration progress and the organization’s activities.

A number of oral, written and video histories are available via our collections in the Bentley Historical Library.

With your help, there’s more we could do.  More research. Programs for schools. Enhanced social media. Virtual tours of additional buildings.
