August 18 – Seasonal close up is upon us
The seasonal wrap is tentatively planned for this coming week end, with a plan to head out Saturday, returning Monday. As with all trips, weather will be a determining factor. We’ll try to provide an update if things change, but otherwise Sunday will be the last day buildings are open for visiting boaters. The grounds remain open year round. This signage next to the workshop provides a brief history of the station for those arriving pre- or post-season.
Close up includes:
- winterizing equipment: adding fuel stabilizer to generators, lawn mowers and gas-powered equipment
- putting the solar system in “winter” mode
- decommissioning the water system
- adding anti-freeze to drains as needed (interestingly, the legacy septic system continues to operate)
- securing equipment in winter storage
- mouse-proofing buildings
- securing shutters on the lighthouse and installing seasonal window coverings on the Assistant Keeper’s Quarters
- doing a final mowing
And, of course, many additional tasks that the team of Jack, Tom, & Jim have under discussion this week.
