2018 Restoration Activities

  • Contractor Jerry Spears performed structural repairs to Fog Signal Building, replacing rotted structural members in the roof and improved support to the chimneys
  • A corrugated steel over-roof was installed on the Fog Signal Building
  • Selectively replaced wood and external steel on the Fog Signal Building’s north wall and soffit
  • Painted replacement steel siding and soffit to blend with existing material
  • Mihm Enterprises repaired leaks around Assistant Keeper’s chimneys and performed an assessment of the roof, making replacement recommendations and cost estimates
  • Completed the brick façade around the “lean to” foundation, adding screened vents to ensure air circulation
  • Added “trap door” to make the crawl space accessible
  • Repaired the deteriorating step at the rear of the lighthouse
  • Created replica trim material to trim  “lean to” doors and windows inside and out, making the second double-hung window functional
  • Adjusted lighthouse interior doors to make them work smoothly and repaired and/or replaced hardware
  • Worked with Empire-based Steel Appeal to build custom offset hinges to secure shutters on the 1867 Lighthouse
  • Installed two pairs of replica shutters on 1867 Lighthouse Tower; two pairs of original shutters have been restored but not yet been installed
  • Whitewashed Lighthouse Dwelling (tower was beyond safe reach)
  • Replica brass hardware was acquired for the 1867 windows and partially installed
  • Painted workshop interior; removed windows and painted thoroughly
  • Recreated missing finials for the Assistant Keeper’s interior stairs
  • Repaired workshop doors and threshold
  • Continued window restoration, including several for the Assistant Keeper’s and one for the skeletal tower stairway
  • Removed fencing from around Skeletal Tower and cleared area of brush
  • Created and installed interpretive sign
  • Created a lighthouse library box, stocking it with historical materials and nature guides
